Netherlands - The Keukenhoff

It all began at Schipol airport, waiting in a queue for the best part of an hour, with hundreds of excited tourists waiting to catch a glimpse of this natural wonder. Crowds and crowds of people packed into buses, one after the other while we patiently waited for our turn to come. A one hour bus journey later, we had finally reached our destination..

Sometimes life and hardships can get in the way of us doing the things we love. The things that make us feel like...us. For me my passion is to be creative and for the last year or so my desire to design or do anything creative had sort of burned out.
Luckily for me, my chap knows me better than I realise... and as it turns out, all I needed was a little shove in the right direction...this direction happened to be Europe's biggest flower garden!
So I was treated to a day beneath the trees, with a get out of jail free card to take as many snaps as I wanted, to wander for as long as I liked and all the while he stood next to me smiling and trying to act as interested as one man possibly can about flowers...what a gent!

The keukenhof stretches over 32 hectares of luscious green land. It is located in the south of Holland in the small town of Lisse. Home to 7 million tulip bulbs, with 800 different species of tulips that come in all different shapes, sizes and colour...this really is a wonderland of natural beauty and my idea of creative inspiration HEAVEN!

P1080106When we arrived we were overwhelmed by the sheer number of people who had travelled far and wide to witness this fleeting beauty. The tulip garden is only open from the 24th of March until the 16th of May which means you have to plan carefully to ensure you don't miss out!

Even though the park was clearly overflowing with people, you can quite happily wander the garden grounds feeling like you are in your own little bubble of bliss...with the odd exception of excited children darting around or being prodded by the odd selife stick!

Even now looking back at these photos I still can't quite believe how astonishing these hybrid beauties are...I have always enjoyed photography but this took my love of it to a whole new level!

You can quite literally wander for miles among some of the worlds most beautiful flowers, and every time you think you have witnessed the most beautiful...another bloom comes along to take your breath away.

The garden is also home to over 100 different sculptures and statues, which are all unique and perfectly situated within this stunning landscape.

After a good hour or so of strolling hand in hand in the sunshine, gazing at the sea of colours, it was time to find a patch of green to take a weight off.

We brought our own little picnic of snacks and fresh strawbs that we quickly grabbed from the trusty Albert Heijn in the station before we departed on the first leg of our trip. So we happily rested beneath the shade of the swaying trees above and watched the world go by.

We were even joined by a couple of the local resident ducks who took a particular interest when I brought out some of my gluten free snacks! Luckily for them, I come from a big family so sharing food is not something new to me.

After our picnic we continued our adventure of the gardens, keen to make sure we didn't miss a single bloom.

I took great amusement in sharing the story with my chap about the famous Alice in Wonderland kerfuffle where the deck of cards (the guards of the Queen of Hearts) accidentally plant white roses in her red kingdom.

In order to hide this mistake from the queen before she yelled 'OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!' they nervously scuttered around with pots of red paint quickly trying to alter the colour of the roses without it being noticed. Which is exactly what he assumed had happened here...however much to my shock and horror...he hasn't actually seen the movie!

I even attempted to use my strawberry blonde hair to see if I could blend in with these beauties...Turns out i'm a bit more of a wild flower...

We could see the tops of the fountain and could hear the laughter of little ones cooling off in the spray. So we ventured over to investigate, and coincidentally the queue for ice-cream was also there...

On a hot day like this, it would have been foolish not to indulge!
P1080273
If I were going again I would have taken a bigger picnic because unless you are one for theme park vendors, there is little in the way of proper food available...especially if you have food allergies. None the less this delicious pot of joy certainly hit the spot!

We ventured into the maze and like two small children, snuck about ducking and weaving through the hedgerows pretending to get lost and then found, giggling the whole way along! We then found ourselves in the company of some of the more furrier persuasion who were conserving their energy in the shade.

This little guy was possibly the cutest piglet I have ever seen! Sadly he was more interested in lolling in the mud rather than snuggling into my hand luggage...

This enchanting place has quite literally set alight the creative fire within my belly and I cannot wait to see what I come up with now that we are home! I have even purchased a new set of paints so only time will tell.
I cannot recommend visiting this natural wonder enough if you can. Take friends, family or a partner in crime and immerse yourself in nature for a day...I promise you won't regret it!
More of my trip coming soon! x
