St. Andrews, Scotland

Recently life has been a little bit tough for my chap, so in a bid to put a smile back on that gorgeous face...I knew it was time for an adventure!
Luckily, my youngest sister and her man were heading off in the car for a day trip to St. Andrews and this couldn't have been better timing or a better location.

For those of you who don't know, St. Andrews is about a 1 hour and 20 minute drive from Edinburgh, happily nestled on the east coast of Fife.
It is known as the "home of golf" because... well the game was invented there... and it is frequent venue for The Open Championship and other major golf championships too. The Old Course is also known to be one of the world's finest and therefore attracts golf enthusiasts from all over the globe. I have to say it...even though I have little to no real understanding of golf...it is pretty bloody gorgeous!
Furthermore, it just so happens I am really rather fond of one golf enthusiast in particular, therefore this couldn't have been a better plan if I tried!
Planning ahead, trusty Trip Advisor pointed us in the direction of Gorgeous Cafe, which had more than enough to satisfy my gluten free carb needs! This quirky, retro cafe was the perfect spot to fuel up on bacon rolls for the start of our little day-date.

After food we wandered off to explore, hand in hand along the cobbled streets marvelling at all the pretty shops; houses, gardens and all that the town had to offer.

The weather was warm, humid with hints of sunshine here and there, with just enough of a light breeze to make strolling along rather pleasant.
The University of St. Andrews is the 3rd oldest university in the UK following Oxford and Cambridge. It nurtures the further education of budding mathematicians, scientists, theologians, philosophers, and politicians to name a few!
The main campus grounds look simply enchanting...

We continued down the cobbled streets in search of The Old Course for him, and the sea for me!

Walking down to be greeted by this pristine green with keen golfers ambling all around, the buzz was actually pretty exciting.

Even on this somewhat grey day, you cannot deny how beautiful this place is.

The St. Andrews Hotel is basically the headquarters of the Royal and Ancient Golf Society and is for the elite...

After a good old snoop around the green, with my chap teaching me bits and pieces about golf etiquette and performance...it was my turn...the sea was calling!

This gorgeous sandy beach stretches two miles and is enjoyed by couples 'bimbling' (a gentle stroll) hand in hand, families out for the day ladened with picnic baskets, and excited littles ones; getting stuck in to building sand castles and jumping the waves as they crash onto the golden sand.

The heat on the beach was so intense, we decided to head back into town to take a peek in some of the shops.

This was inevitable...like a kid in a sweetie shop!

Don't worry...I got my own back dragging him into all the cookery and home ware stores! The next thing on our list....ICE CREAM.

There is a very good reason the queue was out the door and along the road... Jannettas Gelatria... 4 generations, serving ice cream for over 100 years and it is UTTERLY DELICIOUS!

My chap went for this chocolate and mint chocolate chip masterpiece...

Finally it was time to regroup and get some food...Black Horn...home of the beef burger!
100% beef sourced from local farmers and 100% delicious! I could certainly forgive the sticky tables for this scrumptious spread!
He went for a classic beef burger and chunky fries with a coke, and I had the Wild Thing salad (and chunky fries too). Beef burger on top of salad leaves, avocado, sun blushed tomatoes with a lime and yogurt dressing & a diet coke for good measure!
